‘He lived so long because every day was worth living’
My colleague Hilary Friend, who has died aged 82, had a fiercely intelligent mind. She combined a career in adult education with an active interest in music, and was a skilled pianist, recorder player and sang in several choirs.
From 1999 to 2012, she led the Women’s Revolutions Per Minute (WRPM) project, a non-profit company involved in the research, marketing and sales of music by women in many genres, especially world music and political songs.
The Twilight Walk is back! Save the date in your diaries and pledge an evening in your local community to raise awareness for fostering.
In just a few short weeks the fostering team at North Lincolnshire Council will begin this year’s Foster Care Fortnight, running from 11 to 24 May. The annual campaign, led by The Fostering Network, raises the profile of fostering and highlights how foster care transforms lives with this years’ theme being #Thisisfostering.
Participants are invited to join the Twilight Walk and fun in the park on Friday 15 May arriving at 4.45pm and meet at the fountain in Central Park, where there will be a short welcome and event briefing before activities begin at 5pm. This year’s event will feature a scavenger hunt route around the park, giving families and community members a fun and engaging way to explore the park while learning more about fostering.
The event will also include activities delivered in partnership with University Campus North Lincolnshire (UCNL), with some activities taking place inside the building during the evening.
Visitors will be able to make use of refreshments, toilet facilities and nearby parking, with parking available at the main car park on Kingsway or the UCNL car park.
If the weather is kind, there will also be a community picnic and games area, where people are encouraged to bring along blankets and enjoy their picnics together while taking part in the evening’s activities.
Alongside the scavenger hunt and indoor activities, we’re delighted to be working in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council’s Events Team to create our very own fostering bear on the evening. The completed bear will become part of the We’re going on a Bear Hunt sculpture trail, inviting families to explore North Lincolnshire, hunt for the bears, and enjoy fun days out together during the six week summer holidays.
A North Lincolnshire foster carer, said: “Fostering is about giving children the stability, encouragement and care they need to thrive. Events like the Twilight Walk are a great way to bring the community together, celebrate fostering and help people learn more about the difference they could make in a young person’s life.”
Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children, families and communities, said: “Foster carers play an incredibly important role in supporting children and young people in North Lincolnshire. The Twilight Walk is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate our fantastic foster carers and learn more about how fostering can change lives. I would encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the activities and show their support.”
The Twilight Walk evening is open to everyone in the community. Families, friends and supporters are encouraged to come along, meet the fostering team, enjoy the activities and show their support for foster carers across North Lincolnshire.
Participants are also encouraged to dress in orange to help celebrate Foster Care Fortnight and show their support for the fostering community.

Rural households across North Lincolnshire who rely on heating oil are set to receive extra help – with funding on the way. Over 600 households have registered for support already and the council is asking anyone who hasn’t registered to get in touch as soon as possible.

Every year, the North Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP) asks local residents to share their views to help them better understand the issues that matter most.
The scheme will launch at the end of the month but residents are encouraged to register their interest now through the dedicated portal.
